JT Atkinson Builders' Merchants were developing a new eCommerce website with the goals of enhancing functionality, performance, aesthetics, and overall user experience. At the point where wireframes had been created by their systems integrator, I was brought on to establish a consistent and intuitive design language across the site.
My role:
I worked closely with the JT Atkinson team to define and implement a design system, ensuring the new site aligned with both their brand identity and user needs.
The process:
Initial briefing: I began by meeting with the JT Atkinson team to gain a deep understanding of their customers and the unique UI challenges presented by a builders' merchants eCommerce website.
Establishing the design system: I created the foundational elements of the design system, including the color palette, typography, iconography, and CTA styles. This served as the building blocks for a cohesive design across the entire website.
Responsive design of key elements: The team highlighted key sections of the site that required immediate attention. I presented designs at both desktop and mobile breakpoints, ensuring an optimal user experience regardless of device, while also presenting the overall design system to the team.
Refinement and rollout: After gathering feedback from the team, I refined the designs. Upon approval, the final designs were supplied to the systems integrator. This process was repeated for all areas of the website.
The outcome:
The redesigned website successfully launched, receiving positive feedback internally. JT Atkinson reported improved performance outcomes, with the design system contributing to a more seamless user experience across the site.
